Simple Syrups
12+ Servings | 5-minute Prep Time | 15-minute Cook Time
Ingredients
For Base:
1 or 2 c. Demerara or Cane Sugar (1 cup for basic simple syrup or 2 cups for rich simple syrup)
1 c. Filtered Water
For Flavorings:
1 c. Fresh Basil Leaves
4 inches of Fresh Ginger Root, peeled and sliced
1 ½ c. Fresh Figs, stems removed and fruit cut in half
1 ½ c. Fresh Blackberries
Instructions
For Leaf and Root Flavorings:
Combine sugar and filtered water in a medium-sized saucepan, over medium heat. Allow sugar to dissolve completely while stirring continuously. Remove from heat.
Add basil leaves or ginger root to hot syrup mixture and allow to steep for at least 30 minutes.
Strain syrup, then store or serve.
For Fresh Fruit Flavorings:
Combine sugar, filtered water, and fruit of choice in a medium-sized saucepan, over medium heat. Allow to come to gentle simmer while stirring continuously.
Mash fruit about 5 minutes in, or once it has started to soften.
Allow to continue simmering for 10-15 minutes, or until the syrup has thickened.
Strain syrup, then store or serve.
